Work on phase 2 of the project has begun. So far the route of the path has been plotted. Great to see progress and the tyre wall in bloom.

We have been thinking about using a material called Turfgaurd (or similar approved) to create the path and / or stopping spaces in the garden.
Turfgaurd is essentially a green plastic mesh that lies over the grass and eventually the grass grows through it so it is hardly visible. It is suitable for wheelchair ‘access’ paths as it is grippy and can resist the traction of a wheelchair, negating the slippy grass problem we found on site on Friday and it prevents the ground from being churned up by the wheels. After 3-4 weeks of grass growth you can mow straight over the top. We thought it could be possible to lay this on the long but shallow path as a much cheaper and lighter option than 30 tonnes of compacted hardcore.
A version of this material has been used at Gell Street Park so we took a quick excursion down there to test wheelchair access. At Gell Street the mesh is used primarily as a soft safety surface but we still found it offered greater grip to the wheelchair than grass alone although it did not negate slipping entirely. Conclusion: good for flat spaces, jury’s out for use on the path.

Our fundraising machine Jonny has managed to secure a donation of materials for the project. Thanks to John Smith at Scenic Blue we have some Derbyshire sandstone, a palette of brick setts, a bag of play bark, some concrete paving slabs, a wheelbarrow, three spades and a fork. All that we need to do now is shift 5 tonnes of material. Anyone feeling strong?
